VERITAS SOCIETY - Leaving a Legacy of Truth

Searching for Truth…Hearing all sides…Listening deeply…
Seeking God in all things

Veritas – truth – is the motto of the Dominican Order. Veritas calls each Dominican Sister to credibility in her ministry, wherever that may be.

Veritas has led us to:

  • more than 90 years of ministry in Puerto Rico and to more recent mission work in the Dominican Republic;
  • visit Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territories, and the UN;
  • look at our lives in relationship with the ecosystems of our planet;
  • corporate stances against nuclear war, the death penalty, and the war in Iraq;
  • creating Sponsored Ministries such as Benincasa Family Services; Opening Word; Dominican Village, Sophia Garden & Learning Center, and St. Agnes High School; and,
  • promote the dignity of marginalized persons by moving into new ministries when the need arises.

The Veritas Society is a very special giving opportunity which creates a partnership between you and the Dominican Sisters of Amityville.  It enables you to leave a “Legacy of Truth” which will touch the lives of our Sisters, as well as the most vulnerable, well into the future.

Some examples of Planned Gifts are:

  • Bequests – A gift of cash, property, or a percentage of your estate may be left to the Sisters through your will or trust. Every dollar you give to the Dominican Sisters of Amityville is passed on without any gift or estate tax consequences. Imagine if every person touched by the Sisters left a small percentage of their estate to the Dominican Sisters of Amityville—the results would be extraordinary.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs) – You transfer an asset(s) to the Sisters and in return you receive income for life.  The minimum gift is $10,000.  For NY state, click here. For out-of-state, click here.
  • Gifting Appreciated Stock – A gift of appreciated stock allows you to avoid the tax on the gain and receive a deduction for the value of the stock at the time of the gift. You may also gift mutual funds.
  • IRA Gifting – Under the new rules, if you are 70 ½ or older you are allowed to give up to $100,000 in 2007 from your IRA account without paying tax on the distribution. You do not receive a charitable deduction and the gift must be a direct transfer from the account to the charity. However, donors may take possession of the check as long as the check is made payable to the Sisters of St. Dominic.
  • Life Insurance – If you have a paid life insurance policy you no longer need, it may be donated to the Sisters.  You receive a charitable deduction (approximately the cash value).  You might also consider leaving a percentage of the insurance policy to the Sisters.

These and other techniques such as trusts, gifts of property, and other types of insurance gifting will allow your philanthropic endeavors to help the Dominican Sisters of Amityville continue their work for years to come.  Contact Pat Chambers Daly at 631-842-6000, ext. 241 for further information.
