Having walked the streets of Jerusalem, the writings of John bring me back to those narrow, crowded streets. And to that group of followers locked away and struggling with all they had experienced in the last days. Can you sense it? Filled with fear, they huddled behind closed doors, listening to the sounds on the street, wondering what had happened, what was happening, what would happen. But have you felt it? Has there been a time in your own life when the world seemed to be caving in on you, when your own fears and doubts overpowered you? And it is in that moment, as it was then, that Jesus comes to us. Through the barriers we erect, whether locked doors or locked hearts, our God comes to us in our need. We, like the Apostles and the disciples who followed, live our lives communally. And we know, as they knew, that it is in the life we share that we come to know the God of our hearts. It is in and through community that we come to know our God and in that knowing we are strengthened for journeys yet to come. | |
