Colombia continues suffering the consequences of
a 50 year armed conflict; natural resources are being depleted, millions
of people are living in misery, four thousand non-combatant deaths are
reported each year, three million people have already been internally
displaced. There are more than three thousand (nine congregations, Friars, Nuns and Laity) Dominicans living and ministering in a Catholic country where there has been more violence against Church workers in conflict areas than anywhere else in the world. (excerpt from “Let Justice Roll”) |

| The
Amityville Dominicans have had a presence among the poor in Colombia
since the mid ‘90’s. Sister Dismas Marschhauser, OP and Sister
Maureen (Mary Margaret) Wainman, OP work with the people in the remote
hill country of Colombia.
“The poverty of the
area necessitates many youths to leave homes and families to look for
work in other cities, especially in the cultivation
of cocoa. Many never return! For that reason, we have prepared a building
to offer workshops with the hope of establishing small businesses (thanks
to the generosity of our Sisters and the Ministry Support Fund.) Due
to the failure of the bank where we have our savings deposited, the project
is at a standstill. However, we are beginning to receive the money, little-by-little.
So our dream has not been shattered altogether. Our people are humble,
hard workers, poor but have a desire to share, serve and improve. Our
project for small businesses has given them new hope for the future. “ |
