First Friday of Lent Ezekiel 18: 21 – 28 |

During the month of December I had the opportunity to see the Christmas displays in a number of different churches both near and far. The various floral arrangements around the altars and stables were breathtaking. Whether traditional or modern, each one was balanced in a way that made the scene both beautiful and prayerful. Whether we are speaking of floral arrangements or human relationships, there is a need for balance, harmony and right relationship if we want something to be beautiful and prayerful. Today’s readings point that out very strongly to me. Ezekiel speaks of a forgiving God who rejoices when we turn from sin. The one who does what is right and just, the one who is in right relationship with God, will surely live. Matthew states quite clearly that God desires us to be reconciled and at peace with one another before we offer our gift at the altar. Last year’s tragic shooting of the Amish schoolgirls gave us all something to think about as the community forgave the shooter and showed compassion to his family. Forgiveness is usually a painful process, but the God who loves us and desires us to love one |
