Why did Jesus simply walk away? Didn’t those people deserve to be punished? Not only did they fail to see the obvious, they dared to threaten Jesus.

Jeremiah expected vengeance, but that would be a human response. Jesus chose not to react in a human way. He withdrew to give them time to think and come to realize truth.
