John’s Gospel depicts Jesus as the suffering servant, just as Isaiah proclaims in the first reading. We hear the words, “Jesus was deeply troubled…” which provides us the opportunity to see Jesus’ humanity. How might we feel if someone we knew very well was about to betray us? What emotions might you have? Perhaps, we could take a different perspective and ask ourselves, “When have I betrayed God?” My sense is God will be disappointed in us, yet God’s unconditional love remains. What a model for us! Let us be mindful of this the next we feel someone has betrayed us.
