Raymond of Capua
1330 - 1399

October 5

Garden

Raymond was born in Capua, Italy in 1330 of a prominent family. He became acquainted with the Dominican Order when he studied law at the University of Bologna. This led to his entering the order, becoming ordained and a teacher of Theology.

One of his assignments was to be confessor for Catherine in Siena. This was a very challenging experience for him as he was shy and timid. However, at times he joined her in speaking out against papal and political assignments.

In 1380 he was elected Master General of the Order. At that time there were two popes in the Church and two factions within the Order. Raymond was diligent about working to end the schism and reform of the Dominican Order.

What an example Raymond is for us today. We too are struggling with the politics of government leaders and scandals within the church. How are we being invited to be about The Holy Preaching? Are we diligent about studying, praying and learning more about the political scenes in our country as well as in Third World countries? Are we praying for our Beloved Church and working to bring about healing for all?

Let us pray to Raymond of Capua to intercede for our church and the political leaders in our world.
